As one Microsoft employee reports on the company’s forum, you can now get notifications on your desktop every time your Skype contact come online.

Also, you can select what contacts to receive notifications from.

For some users, this sounds similar to the Yahoo Messenger notification, where you could also saw the small pop-up window in the bottom right corner of your screen followed by a sound notification.

Once you have updated to the latest version of Skype, you can choose to receive a notification on desktop when anyone in your contact list goes from offline to available.  The notification appears as a small pop-up window in the bottom right corner of your screen – just click the alert to start a chat with that person.

There are some differences between the two tools. Skype gives users control control over which contact you will see coming online. At the same time, Skype doesn’t have an alert when someone is logging out, as Yahoo Messenger once had.

There are a few simple steps to set up this alert as this setting is off by default.

To turn it on, click your profile picture > Settings > Notifications > contact comes online notification.

The new feature is available for Windows desktop, Skype for Mac, Skype for Linux, Skype for Windows 10 and Skype for Web.
