In the world of smart home technology, nothing is more important than being able to “plug and play.” We expect our devices to work with little or no interruption. That’s why it’s so frustrating when something goes wrong. If your Sharp TV won’t turn on, you know that frustration well.

Not to worry. There are steps you can take when your TV won’t turn on before the dreaded call to customer service.

My Sharp TV Won’t Turn On

When your Sharp TV won’t turn on, you’ll need to go through a basic checklist to eliminate the most obvious and easily resolvable problems. They include:

  • Check for overheatingCheck the remote controlCheck the power sourceCheck the cords and cablesPerform a hard reset

It may sound simple, but sometimes, the simplest answers are the correct answers.

Check For Overheating

If your TV was on and shut down on its own and won’t turn back on, there’s a good chance it has overheated. Most modern electronics, including Sharp TVs, have a safety shutoff switch to prevent the unit from being damaged or catching fire from extreme heat.

If overheating is the problem, make sure your TV has adequate ventilation, that it isn’t mounted too close to a source of high heat, such as a space heater, and give it some time to cool down.

If your Sharp TV keeps overheating for no apparent reason, unplug it from the receptacle; something is definitely wrong.

Check The Remote Control

You’ll be surprised just how often the problem is as simple as the remote control. Our instincts tell us to shake it, smack it with the palm of our hands, and then open the battery compartment to give them a good twist and see if that fixes it.

While those instincts may have served you well when you just needed to change the channel, this situation is different. If your Sharp TV won’t turn on, it’s worth the time and effort to replace the batteries with fresh ones right out of the gate.

You can also buy a universal Sharp remote that works with all Sharp Smart TVs. Additionally, you can download the Sharp App and use the remote from your phone.

Once you’ve eliminated the remote as the issue, it’s time to move on.

Check The Power Source

Checking the power source means making sure the receptacle your Sharp TV plugs into is functioning properly. That receptacle will either be a standard electrical outlet or an accessory, such as a surge protector or extension cord.

First, test the wall or floor outlet by plugging in something – such as a small lamp – that you know works. Check your circuit breaker box for a tripped circuit if the outlet has no power.

Once determining that the outlet works, test extension cords, power strips, and surge protectors by plugging them into a different outlet you know is working. Once you’ve eliminated the power supply as your issue, you can move on.

Check The Cords And Cables

Make sure all of the cords and cables are properly connected and fit tightly. Sometimes the problem can be as easy as a loose plug. Checking the cables of the devices attached to the Sharp TV, such as a cable box, isn’t required, but it doesn’t hurt.

Once you’ve verified that the cords and cables are good to go, you’re ready for the last step.

Perform A Hard Reset

The last step to take is the hard reset. Follow the steps below:

  • Unplug the TVPress and hold the “power” button for 30 secondsLeave the TV unplugged for 10 minutesPress and hold the “channel down” and “input” buttons on the TV’s control panel while plugging it back into a powered receptacle.

If that were the issue, your TV would turn on.

I Reset My Sharp TV, And It Still Won’t Turn On

Once you’ve gone through the steps above, you’ve done everything possible to get your Sharp TV to turn on. So…what now? Is my Sharp TV broken? Who do I call?

Unfortunately, at this point, your Sharp TV probably isn’t going to turn on. You’ve gone through the motions, and it’s time to call it. Your options, at this point, are limited by where and when you bought your Sharp TV.

If you’ve just unboxed the TV and it won’t turn on, the obvious and correct choice is to return it. Brand new devices do come damaged, which will be covered by your store’s return policy.

If you’ve gone past the return date, you’re limited by when your manufacturer’s warranty runs out. Sharp TVs are guaranteed against defects in materials and craftsmanship for a period of one year. A set that stops working altogether definitely qualifies.

If your warranty is expired, the best thing to do with a modern Sharp smart TV is to dispose of it and replace it properly. Since Sharp consistently receives better than 4-star reviews for the bulk of its products, this isn’t a widespread issue, and Sharp is a name you can trust.
