However, cybercriminals are evolving and are continuously finding new ways to lure their victims.

According to a report made by Tessian, approximately two million malicious messages were successfully bypassing email defenses between July 2020 and July 2021.

Caught off-guard

According to the report, cybercriminals tend to strike when their victims least expect it. They are either tired or distracted. When analyzed, a majority of the emails were sent during the holidays.

The said criminals picked a designated time to send the emails, which was found to be in the afternoon around 2 pm or evening at 6 pm.

Spoofing technique

The cybercriminals employed either name spoofing or domain impersonation. A website, popular business or individual well-known to the victim were used as top spoofing techniques. The email will impersonate any of the above and take advantage of the distraction.
