Redstone 4 Adds Security Questions For Windows 10 Local Accounts

Microsoft added another useful security improvement for the local accounts on Windows 10. The company introduced security questions in the latest build to help users recover their lost or forgotten password.

Starting with Windows 10 Insider build 17063 and reaching everyone with the release of the Redstone 4 update which is scheduled for the spring of 2018, local accounts will benefit from security question support. This will take users through an easy wizard for resetting their passwords.

In order to configure this new feature, you will have to configure up to three different security questions and answers. According to Microsoft, local accounts that have already been set up can be secured by gong to Settings – Accounts – Sign-in Options – Update your security questions.

Users who are installing Windows 10 and going through the initial wizard will be allowed to configure the security questions while they’re installing it. In the release notes of the latest build, Microsoft explained that with the Creators Update, the company started to work on self-help solutions for password recovery from the Lock screen.

Now, this functionality is also added to local accounts via the newly available use of security questions for local accounts.

After you set up the security questions, if you can’t remember the password on the lock screen, you will be shown a lock to reset your password. After you click on it, you’ll be prompted to enter the answers to your security questions.

Windows 10 Redstone 4 is scheduled to be finalized at the beginning of the next year, and it will be rolled out to users in the spring.

Build 17063 is the biggest one so far, and it’s filled with new features including Sets, Windows Timeline, Fluent Design refinements and more improvements such as this support for security questions for local accounts.
