Microsoft recently started to offer Windows 10 as a recommended update for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. But users are not quite happy with Microsoft’s decision, because they don’t want to be pushed to upgrade, which is exactly what Microsoft’s been doing lately.

But, there’s a way to block ‘Windows 10 recommended update” on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, and users who don’t want to receive Windows 10 as a recommended update will certainly be happy about this.

Preventing your Windows 7/8.1 computer from receiving Windows 10 as a recommended update is actually fairly easy, and it doesn’t require any registry tweaks, like turning off the Get Windows 10 feature, for example. It only requires changing the way how you receive updates on your Windows 7/8.1 computer.

If your computer is set to receive updates automatically, Microsoft will download Windows 10 on your computer (it still won’t be installed, though). So, to prevent Microsoft from doing that, you need to turn off automatic updates in your settings. In case you don’t know how to do that in Windows 7, just follow these steps:

  • Go to Start, and open Control Panel
  • Go to System and security > Windows Update
  • Choose Change settings
  • Make sure Recommended updates checkbox is unchecked

You can do the same in Windows 8.1, or you can change your update settings through Settings app: Settings > Update and recovery > Windows update and select Choose how updates get installed, and just uncheck Recommended updates checkbox and click OK.

There you go, after changing your updates settings, Windows 10 won’t automatically install on your computer. However, it will still be visible in Windows Update, but you can hide it, by right-clicking on it, and choosing Hide.

This method will get the job done for now, but we know how hard Microsoft pushes the upgrade to Windows 10, so don’t be surprised if the company comes up with a new way to make you upgrade your current operating system to Windows 10.
