After some major changes to Windows Defender and other cross-platform products, Microsoft is now rebranding the web version of Office, know as Office Online, to just Office.
Microsoft’s rebranding strategy for cross-platform products
The move is part of a bigger branding campaign with the purpose to differentiate cross-platform Microsoft products from Windows products.
Microsoft officials stated that the change will apply to Word and Excel, as well:
For now, it seems that Project Online, SharePoint Online, Exchange Online, and Office Online Server names will remain. The rebrandig will only apply to Office apps.
Office uses sub-brands to denote our offerings such as Office 365 and Office 2019.Because our offerings have evolved to provide access to apps on more than one platform, it no longer makes sense to use any platform-specific sub-brands.In line with this approach, the official product name for what was previously referred to as “Office Online” is now simply “Office.” We have also discontinued use of the “Online” branding with each of the apps so “Word Online” is now “Word,” “Excel Online” is now “Excel,”
It’s possible that the renaming will have a negative impact on the company’s products, as things will get confusing fast. We’ll have to wait and see how Windows users will manage to differentiate one version from another.
