Qualcomm wants its newest processor, the Snapdragon 835, to be a PC mainstay.

Partnership with Microsoft

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon ARM-based system-on-chips are part of the smartphone world, but the company wants them to become more than just smartphone processors. The Snapdragon 835 chip incorporates Qualcomm’s newest X16 LTE and is the foundation of the Snapdragon Mobile platform.

After partnering with Microsoft and using the new Windows 10 for ARM processors, Qualcomm is currently pitching the chips as elements of a new PC platform set to mix the best elements of the smartphone and the PC: on-the-go connectivity, silent operation, lightweight, long battery life, and no fan.

PCs will be built using the new chips will offer 50% more battery life than x86 systems and if you have a Snapdragon inside your machine, you will not need a Wi-Fi connection to get your email and browse social media anymore with its always-on connectivity.

Windows 10 for ARM is Microsoft’s second attempt to build a version of Windows for ARM chips, the first being Windows RT. Due to a shortage of software, that OS didn’t work out as expected. Things might just work out perfectly this time because the OS will include x86 emulation and it can run 32-bit Windows apps unmodified.

Asus, Lenovo, and HP plan on introducing the Snapdragon Mobile PC systems

This consortium of companies wants to introduce Snapdragon Mobile PC systems, but dates and pricing are not yet set. Future PCs will be systems similar to laptops, and they’ll feature a higher level of integration than Intel’s mobile chips and more space for battery. The size and weight of the machines will also be reduced.

All in all, these future PCs seem great, and we just can’t wait to get our hands on them and test their capabilities.
