In 2019, Microsoft announced two new dual-screen mobile devices at a New York hardware event. The Surface Duo and Surface Neo were the devices revealed at that event.

  • Microsoft revealed the first Surface Neo concept videos in late 2019.
  • The release date of the Surface Neo has been constantly postponed since the initial reveal.
  • A new YouTube video page speculates Microsoft has canceled the Neo.
  • Another YouTube video includes what looks to be a prototype Surface Neo chassis.

While the big M has released the Duo, the Neo remains on ice. A new YouTube video suggests Microsoft has canceled the Neo.

The Surface Neo was originally slated for a 2020 release. However, that device has not seen the light of day. Microsoft has reputedly delayed Surface Neo because of a changed Windows 10X strategy.

Therefore, it has been speculated Microsoft will hold back on releasing Neo until 2022.

Some speculate that the delay may lead to a cancelation

Such delays have inevitably fueled rumors that Microsoft has canceled Surface Neo. A new Hikari Calyx Tech video page on YouTube says the Surface Neo has been canceled.

That page includes the video directly below.

That video shows what looks like a genuine Surface Neo like the one shown in the official Microsoft Neo video. The video includes what looks like a prototype chassis of the Neo tablet. The device doesn’t incorporate its paired displays.

Rumors about Neo cancellation were raised by changes on the big M’s website. Microsoft has completely removed the Surface Neo product listing page from its website.

The original product listing page for the Neo once said Microsoft will release that device in the 2020 holiday season.

Yet, Microsoft’s Mr. Panay reiterated throughout 2020 the Neo is only delayed. In a Verge interview, Mr. Panay is quoted as saying:

So, the official Microsoft line is that the Surface Neo has been delayed. If you really can’t wait for the Neo, Microsoft’s Surface Duo dual-screen mobile is the next best thing that is currently available

Neo is delayed… I wanted the right time to bring that product with the right experience. We believe in that concept and form factor and size. It will be a beautiful complement to Duo with Windows and I’m excited about it. It’s a product that’s near and dear to my heart.
