New Bug Detected Windows 10 April Update Freezes Computers

Recent user reports revealed that Windows 10 version 1803 is plagued by random freezes which seem to be related to/triggered by the Chrome browser.

Google Chrome remains the most popular browser among Windows 10 users. Microsoft has been desperately trying to convince users to switch to Edge, to no avail.

Despite the plethora of new Edge features and improvements, Chrome is still the default browser for over 60% of Windows 10 users.

Well, these random freeze might convince some users to temporarily switch to a different browser. Google Chrome often freezes on the Windows 10 April Update and there is no confirmed hotfix or solution in sight.

Taking into account the ongoing Chrome vs. Edge war, some users joked about it saying this was a Microsoft-made problem to force people to switch to Edge:

I had also couple of freezes with VS Code but there was always Chrome in the background. And I don’t need to go to sleep or restart to fix it, just unplugging it from the power does the job and as screen comes back on Chrome minimizes so it’s got to be Chrome related issue.

One user suggested that navigating to UserAppDataLocalGoogleChromeUser Data (Symbolic Link) in Explorer before launching Chrome fixed the problem.

However, this quick solution doesn’t work for all users, but you can give it a try.

These freezes affect other Windows 10 components as well, including Office, Excel, Device Manager, and more but somehow they’re all related to having Chrome open.

Most likely this is an optimization issue. Microsoft and Google have yet to acknowledge the problem, but you can send your feedback to both companies to let them know about this issue.
